Linda Dawson, RHIT, CCS
Linda graduated from Portland Community College in 1975 with a degree in Medical Records Technology. She has been working in HIM since that time, in Oregon, Alaska, and British Columbia, Canada.
She started coding with ICD-8, and in 1979 transitioned to ICD-9, then to ICD-10-CA in British Columbia in 2001, and finally to ICD-10 in the US a couple years ago. She is an AHIMA trained trainer. She taught ICD-9/10 coding at Portland Community College for 3 years in their HIM program.
She has worked closely with CDI programs at Salem Health and now Providence and has a passion for correct documentation and coding. She has worked closely with Quality Departments on Core Measures and Patient Safety.
She joined Providence 3 years ago as a Coding QI Compliance Auditor and Trainer. In her current role, she trained coders who were progressing from ED and ASU to IP coding. She developed the training plans which encompass all the body systems, and educated on clinical indicators of disease, and when to query for clinical indicators to prevent insurance denials. She also developed and helped to implement two Health streams modules – One for Introduction to IP coding and another for Queries.
Her passion is correct documentation and coding from the health record. She loves to share her knowledge of coding with her coworkers and all who ask for assistance with coding.
She is our Oregon Coding Roundtable Coordinator for Oregon, serves on the Education Committee, and is also an active member of ACDIS NW (treasurer), and ACDIS national.
